about

"Here is your sign to get therapy, you’re working more than 70 hours a week.

Babe, for real?
You’re busy?
'I don’t know if I’m taking on too much.'
YOU ARE. Stop looking for the answers."

— Excerpt from Hilary Yeo's "To the asshole at the end of the line"

We are pleased to announce ER01 Spittin' Metal, the first in a series of compilation albums featuring experimental dance music from our community in Singapore and elsewhere.

Endless Return launched as a virtual rave series on August 22 2020 through the teleconference platform Zoom. Developed by XUE with a close group of collaborators and friends, ER has since hosted 5 raves online and supported over 50 DJs, producers and video artists from Singapore and Southeast Asia. Throughout the plague rave years of 2020 - 22, marked by club closures and strict curbs on gatherings in dark rooms with loud sounds, felt perhaps uniquely in the region, ER persisted.

Conceptualized as a regenerative rave experiment, ER foregrounds genres and aesthetics that drift from tiu tiu manyao to noise and hardstyle drawing on the artistic impulses of its sprawling community. The persistency of these impulses and sonic motifs in the face of seemingly endless restrictions being played out IRL is evident of something wider and more enigmatic than our immediate community and limited context. Recursive kick drum patterns persist and cary on endlessly despite their habitats and normative means of circulation being effectively eviscerated.

An addendum to ER's now concluded life as a solely virtual rave platform, Spittin’ Metal brings together 9 commissioned tracks, two short texts and a music video constituting its first compilation release and initiates their rave’s permanent migration offline and into the sweat of the IRL.

This release is supported by the Platform Projects Curatorial Award overseen by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore.

The namesake of the album is derived from Sonia Sanchez's 'Just Don't Ever Give up on Love' (1984) from Shake Loose my Skin.
